Maitland: In the quiet and the dark of evening, they come together. Shouldering grief, those coping this holiday season with life-altering losses like death and divorce can discover, as a wise man once said "No one can grieve for us, but we don't have to do it alone."
WHO: Hosted by VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Central Florida and New Hope for Kids. New Hope for Kids provides specialized support to children and families grieving the loss of a loved one and grants wishes to children with life-challenging illnesses in Central Florida.
WHAT: Wise words, quiet time, inspirational music and practical advice are part of the evening. Each participant is asked to bring a cozy wrap and a candle that can be lit again throughout the holiday season. Professional and volunteer speakers will offer support, advice and encouragement on handling the holidays in appropriately personal ways.
Candle Lighting Orlando, which is sponsored by community health, social service, funeral and pastoral care providers, expects more than 250 attendees, many of whom are drawn to this candle-lighting ceremony year after year.
"Going to Lake Eola is one of the good choices I make to help myself," one attendee explained. Added another, "It gave me a much-needed ritual, a structured container to hold chaotic and unorganized feelings."
WHEN: This holiday-preparation event takes place on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 21, at 6 p.m.
WHERE: Lake Eola Amphitheater, at Rosalind and Washington streets in downtown Orlando. Parking is available at the city lot at 55 West Central Boulevard
